Neil Renison
A retired James Cook University librarian at the time, Neil was reluctantly dragged on to the committee in 2017 when we found ourselves bereft of an accountant to take the Treasurer role. While he did not have a business background, with support from Annette Ellis and the staff of Sturt Business Centre, Neil quickly found his feet on this steep learning curve, thanks to his strong computer and organisational skills.
Over the following years he has provided the orchestra with outstanding financial stewardship, diligence, and integrity. His careful management of the Orchestra’s finances has underpinned its stability and growth, and ensured that GBRO can continue to deliver high-quality musical experiences to the Townsville and North Queensland community.
Neil has also made an exceptional contribution through his work on grant applications. He has dedicated many hours to researching, preparing, and submitting applications, resulting in numerous successful outcomes that have directly supported the Orchestra’s programs and sustainability. In addition, he has managed the increasingly complex acquittal processes with precision and accountability, ensuring full compliance with funding requirements.
During a series of changing funding arrangements for orchestra management, Neil’s expertise has been invaluable. He has played a key role in navigating these changes. His professionalism and attention to detail in these areas have significantly strengthened the Orchestra’s governance and operational capacity.
Neil’s contribution to the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra extends well beyond the expectations of his role. His sustained commitment, willingness to undertake complex and often unseen work, and his dedication to the long-term success of the Orchestra make him a most worthy recipient of Life Membership.
