Percussion Workshops in February 2021 – Booked Out!
BRO are delighted to offer the Townsville musical community a unique opportunity to work with professional percussionist, Wyana O’Keeffe in a series of workshops designed to equip instrumentalists with the techniques and skills to confidently participate in an orchestral percussion section. With over 20 years of orchestral experience, Wyana is passionate about sharing her love of music and music making with her community. See more information about Wyana here.
Workshops will be held on 20th and 21st February 2021 and are fully booked.
Workshop 1: Percussion Beginners – A Crash Course in Orchestral Percussion
For non-percussionist musicians to learn basic techniques on orchestral percussion instruments and confidently participate in a percussion section.
This workshop is suitable for instrumentalists, instrumental teachers and advanced students of music (music reading skills essential).
Workshop 1 includes…
- basic stick technique
- appropriate mallet/ stick selection
- techniques on bass drum, crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, triangle, tambourine, tam-tam, tuned percussion and more
- percussion notation reading and conventions
- a percussionist’s role in an orchestra
Workshop 2: Percussion Development Workshop
For percussionists to refine their skills and techniques in orchestral percussion.
This workshop is suitable for percussionists / drummers, percussion teachers and advanced percussion students (music reading skills essential).
Successful applicants will be requested to bring your own mallets/ sticks if possible.
Workshop 2 includes…
- extended techniques on snare drum, timpani, crash cymbals, bass drum, triangle, tambourine, crash cymbals and more
- section leading and organisation
- focus on common orchestral excerpts
- participants may be invited to select specific repertoire to be covered
Venue: Performing Arts Centre at William Ross State High School, Mervyn Crossman Drive, Annandale.
Fee: $10 per participant.

The workshops will be conducted in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines.
Teachers may request a certificate showing 6 hours professional development on successful completion of the workshops.
