Orchestral Conducting Workshop

13th – 14th July 2024

The Barrier Reef Orchestra will present an Orchestral Conducting Workshop focused on the development of tertiary-level conductors, music educators and instrumentalists, providing practical and theoretical fundamentals of orchestral conducting.

The Workshop, led by Maestro Theodore Kuchar, will consist of four three-hour sessions (two sessions daily). Each participant will enjoy a minimum of 20 minutes of daily podium time in front of an instrumental ensemble consisting of string quintet and keyboard.

The focus of the Workshop will include:

  • conducting technique
  • communication skills with instrumentalists
  • the significance and specificities related to the string instruments of the orchestra and
    the knowledge of creating bowings as related to the practical needs and the knowledge
    of those instruments

Repertoire for the Workshop to include:

  • BEETHOVEN Egmont Overture, Op. 84
  • BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 (first movement)
  • BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60 (first movement)

Registration for Conducting Workshop Podium Participants will be limited to 6 individuals. Applicants should supply name, contact details, educational background including most advanced degree and current professional position.

The selection of participants will be done after the application deadline on June 28th, and all applicants will be notified by email. If you are not offered a slot in the course you may wish to attend as an Auditor. The fees for Podium Participants are $500 for the 2 day course.

 Non-podium Participants (Auditors or Listeners) are welcome to attend. Simple registration consisting of name and contact details and if attending on both days is all that is required, as this will help with catering. The fees for Auditors (non-podium participants) are $40 per day, payable on registration.
