Orchestral Conducting Workshop – UPDATED

At Sir George Kneipp Auditorium, James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland on Saturday 13th July 2024

The Barrier Reef Orchestra will present an Orchestral Conducting Workshop focused on the development of tertiary-level conductors, music educators and instrumentalists, providing practical and theoretical fundamentals of conducting. The workshop is open to conductors of all types of musical ensembles.

The Workshop, led by Maestro Theodore Kuchar, will consist of two three-hour sessions. Each participant will enjoy a minimum of 40 minutes of podium time in front of a chamber ensemble.

The focus of the Workshop will include:

  • conducting technique
  • communication skills with instrumentalists
  • development of artistic leadership skills that can be applied to any type of musical ensemble

Repertoire for the Workshop will include:

  • BEETHOVEN Egmont Overture, Op. 84 – the score is here.
  • BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 (first movement) – the score is here.
  • BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60 (first movement) – the score is here.

Participants will be allowed to video record their participation.

Conducting Workshop Podium Participants will be limited to 6 individuals. Applicants should supply name, contact
details, educational background including most advanced degree and current professional position.

The selection of participants will be done after the application deadline on June 28th, and all applicants will be notified by email. If you are not offered a position in the course, you may wish to attend as an Auditor/Observer. The fees for Podium Participants are $250 for the 1 day course, payable on acceptance of the offer.

Non-podium participants (Auditor/Observer) are welcome to attend. Simple registration consisting of name and contact details is all that is required, as this will help with catering. The fees for Auditors/Observers (non-podium participants) are $20 per the full day, payable on registration.

Theodore Kuchar – Biography

The multiple award-winning conductor Theodore Kuchar is the most recorded conductor of his generation and appears on over 150 compact discs for the Naxos, Brilliant Classics, Ondine, Marco Polo, Toccata Classics and Centaur labels. He presently serves as Principal Conductor of the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine while having previously served as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of two of Europe’s leading orchestras, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly the Czech Radio Orchestra) while also serving as the Principal Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta. In the 2011-12 season he commenced his tenure as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela and prior to that served as the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra in Brisbane, Australia.

In 2023, Theodore was appointed Artistic Director of the Barrier Reef Orchestra.
