Great Barrier Reef Youth Orchestra
The Great Barrier Reef Orchestra is planning to establish a Youth Orchestra as part of its long-term commitment to developing young orchestral musicians in North Queensland.
As the first step, GBRO will host a Youth Orchestra Trial Weekend in August 2026. The weekend will bring together young musicians from across the region to rehearse and perform challenging orchestral repertoire under the guidance of experienced conductors and tutors. It will also help determine the feasibility of establishing a permanent GBRO Youth Orchestra in 2027.
Who can participate?
The programme is open to young musicians who are
– 13 – 23 years of age
– AMEB Grade 5 standard or above
– Interested in developing their orchestral playing

Friday 28 – Sunday 30 August 2026
Venue
Pimlico State High School Denise Glasgow Performing Arts Centre.
What to expect
Participants will spend the weekend rehearsing orchestral repertoire in full orchestra and sectional rehearsals led by experienced tutors. The focus will be on developing ensemble skills, orchestral technique and musicianship while working alongside other committed young players from across the region.
Fees
– Application fee $20 (non-refundable)
– Weekend Participation Fee $55
– Late application fee $75
The registration fee includes GBRO Student Membership.

The Great Barrier Reef Orchestra is committed to supporting the next generation of musicians in North Queensland. A Youth Orchestra will provide a pathway for developing players to gain experience performing high-quality orchestral repertoire while building the skills needed to progress into the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra and other advanced ensembles.

Strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass
Woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon
Brass: trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba
Percussion: timpani, auxiliary percussion
